Midwest Energy Earns Governor’s Award For Energy Efficiency
Lt. Governor Mark Parkinson presented Midwest Energy with the Governor’s Energy Award at the Kansas Wind and Renewable Energy Conference September 23 and 24 in Topeka. Midwest Energy was singled out for its work in energy efficiency and was the only utility in Kansas among the four category honorees. In presenting the award, the cooperative was cited for several energy efficiency programs including offering energy audits to customers since the 1980s, employing Certified Energy Raters and its newest energy efficiency effort, the How$martSM program. The How$mart program provides funds for energy efficiency improvements such as insulation and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. A monthly surcharge on the customer’s utility bill covers the cost of qualifying improvements. The surcharge is always less than the projected savings. The Kansas Corporation Commission recently approved Midwest Energy’s request to offer the plan to all customers. There were four categories of awards given at the conference, including energy efficiency, energy leadership, renewable energy and energy education. Earnie Lehman, President and General Manager for Midwest Energy said, “We are honored to receive this award, which validates the critical role energy efficiency programs like How$martSM will play in reducing customer bills during this era of rising costs. As a cooperative, we only work for our customers, not for investors. That's why our employees have worked directly with our customers to help them save money and energy long before it became an urgent need."
