Midwest Energy Seeking President and General Manager

Midwest Energy, Inc., a customer-owned, vertically integrated electric and natural gas utility company, is seeking an individual to provide leadership, technical and business management skills in partnership with the Board of Directors, to position Midwest Energy for long-term success.  This position will lead and oversee all company activities, subject to the authority and policy guidance of the Board.  With the pending retirement of the current President and General Manager in early 2018, it is the Board’s desire to have this position filled by September 2017.  The individual in this position strategically aligns the company’s vision and stakeholders to maintain and improve the company’s customer responsiveness and competitive position.  The manager promotes safe working habits and the continued provision of reliable and cost effective energy and related services to the company’s customer-owners.

Midwest Energy serves 50,450 electric customers and 42,672 gas customers in 40 counties in central and western Kansas.  It owns peaking generation facilities and operates 11,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines.  The corporate office is located in the community of Hays, Kan. (population 21,000) with excellent medical facilities, schools and a university.

Significant responsibilities of the position include:

  • Supports the Board of Directors as it carries out its governance functions by providing insight and direction.
  • Oversees the fiscal activities of the organization and provides strong stewardship of the financial resources required to conduct company business in a manner that meets the expectations of its owners.
  • Leads development and ongoing review of company mission, vision, long-term objectives and related strategies and initiatives.
  • Builds positive relationships in the public arena by actively representing the company and working with policymakers, regulators, industry associations and other stakeholders.
  • Aligns the organization’s strategy in concert with the evolving needs, challenges and opportunities of the utility industry.
  • Maintains high quality staffing in leadership positions, through effective selection, development, and succession planning. Through the staff, individual directs the activities of approximately 280 full time employees.

Minimum qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in management or a major utility-related discipline required.  MBA or similar graduate credential desirable but not required.  Demonstrated working knowledge of the utility industry, including accounting/finance, regulatory and legislative processes and service delivery.  Can articulate and manage industry challenges, opportunities for growth and development; understanding major issues and tradeoffs.

Relevant experience:  Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible middle and senior management experience, including at least seven years of utility managerial experience, preferably in multiple utility functions.  Previous CEO experience desirable but not required.  Experience working with or for boards of directors, or other similar experience in functioning in a governing board environment is a plus.  Prefer candidates with demonstrated experience in community service and involvement, including initiating, developing, or maintaining community activities and functions.
